Kiwanis International

A vital partner in eliminating iodine deficiency

Thanks to Kiwanis International's Worldwide Service Project, great strides have been made toward the goal of eliminating iodine deficiency worldwide. Working with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, the entire Kiwanis family joined together to raise funds to help eliminate the problem of iodine deficiency by supporting salt ionization, testing and monitoring, and community outreach and education.

Members of the Kiwanis family can take great pride in their accomplishments. Today, about 70 percent of the people in the developing world have access to iodized salt, and UNICEF has hailed this project as one of the greatest public health triumphs of the 20th century.  Through the dedication and hard work of the Kiwanis family, not only in raising money but also in raising awareness of the problem and motivating governments and industry to act, millions of children have been protected against the invisible but devastating effects of iodine deficiency.

UNICEF has reported that Kiwanis-raised funds are now at work in more than 89 nations and more than 80 million children in the developing world will be born free of iodine deficiency disorder this year.  Today, the number of households estimated to be consuming iodized salt has jumped dramatically from 20 percent in 1990 to more than 70 percent. The Kiwanis family has raised more than $80 million to eliminate iodine deficiency disorders--heralded as one of the most successful health initiatives in the world.

Objects of Kiwanis

The six permanent Objects of Kiwanis International were approved by Kiwanis club delegates at the 1924 Convention in Denver, Colorado. Through the succeeding decades, they have remained unchanged.
  • To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life.
  • To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.
  • To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business, and professional standards.
  • To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.
  • To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build better communities.
  • To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.

Kiwanians Read Around the World

Open a child’s mind to reading—all year long

Every child should experience the joy of reading. Kiwanis members believe this, and have long been dedicated to Kiwanis International’s Read Around the World program.

What used to be a month long observance is now a focus for the whole year, giving the entire Kiwanis family of clubs the chance to implement Read Around the World projects at any time.

More reading projects touch more children’s lives.

Kiwanis’ Read Around the World program focuses on sharing the joy of books with children—from reading with them to getting them books they can have for their very own.

If you’re interested in learning more about the Read Around the World program, or how you can help get books to children who need them most, contact 1-317-875-8755, ext. 211.

What is iodine?
Where does it come from?

Iodine is a trace element found mostly in soil. In a perfect world, crops absorb iodine through their root systems, and humans and livestock take in iodine through the foods they eat. In vast regions of the world, however, arable land doesn't contain enough of this essential element, and crops and livestock in these areas are therefore deficient in iodine.
